In October 2016, Brooklyn Animal Care Center (NYCACC) rescued a dog from the streets of Brooklyn, New York. They estimated her age to be about 13 years old, a chow-shepherd mix and have lived in the streets of Brooklyn all her life. The shelter staff named their rescue Kayla and assessed her general health. It seems that living in the streets for 13 years took a toll on her health as they found her in a really poor condition.
The volunteers, along with the shelter’s staff, reached out to a no-kill shelter called Animal Haven and pulled out Kayla from Brooklyn Animal Care. She underwent an intensive health check and found out that she is suffering from kidney disease, oral cancer, and has antibiotic-resistant bacteria called MRSA.
Due to the severity of her illness, the shelter’s veterinarian estimated that Kayla had three to six months left on earth. Animal Haven knew what Kayla went through and wanted Kayla to enjoy the remaining time, so they decided to team up with Foster Dogs, Inc. to find her a foster home. Animal Haven reached out to Jillian Conigliaro asking for her help to care for Kayla.
Conigliaro said that the timing was perfect as they recently lost her dog from cancer as well and would love to take in Kayla. She and her husband went to the shelter to meet Kayla in person and instantly fell in love with her. And in November 2016, Kayla moved in with their family and was described as an old soul who likes having her own space and loves sitting in the rain.
Also, the family knew that they have a limited time to spend with Kayla, so they created a bucket list where she can go on adventures with her new family. Thanks to her medical treatment, her condition started to get better and decided to take her to Coney Island where she rode the towering Wonder wheel, ate a hotdog and strolled the beach with her family.
A part of her bucket list included visits to several FDNY firehouses where she was given free shirts and has been allowed to sit on fire trucks. They have other exciting activities planned for Kayla, and I’m sure she loves her new home.
