Right Feeding your dog, is a very important activity.
Feeding your beloved pet, is a very important activity. Something that should be done adhering to all the principles guiding it. The feeding of our beloved human companions is very essential.
You don’t want to be feeding your dog foods, it does not really dig. Or feeding at inappropriate times or periods. Essentially, when it comes to feeding your dog, there is often about a thousand schools of thought.
Including about as many types of food as possible. But there has been established an unsaid ten commandments, which a dog owner must follow to reap the full benefits of feeding your beloved pet.
And these briefly explained commandments have to be followed for your dog’s health and overall wellness. You would not want to incur economic disadvantages and somewhat other wraths that are needless. These commandments briefly explained as follows include;
1. CHOOSE YOUR DOG’S FOOD VERY WISELY;
Even as humans, the importance of choosing the food we eat wisely cannot be underestimated. And as pertaining to dogs, when choosing your dog’s food there are always about four main characteristics to consider;
- Your dog’s age
- Your dog’s size
- Your dog’s physical activity. Its range of the physical activities its engages in.
- And the overall general health (cases of the likely occurrence of food allergies, any dietary restrictions and so on)
Over time, studies and constant observation has shown that different species of dogs or generally different types of dogs have different nutritional requirements. So all these conditions should be taken into consideration and considered as important. And to note that despite all the thing dog food manufacturers may dangle before you, there is no one size fits all food that can provide the perfect nutrition to all dogs.
2. MEASURE YOUR DOG’S FOOD;
In developed countries such as the U.S, more than half of the dogs available have been found to be overweight or obese. A condition which directly has an impact on the general health of these dogs. And this condition is mostly as a result of overfeeding and a lack of exercise. Dogs that are kept healthy and on a very flexible eating regimen, lead very happy lives. So the importance of feeding your fur baby nutritious food, in the most appropriate quantity cannot be underestimated.
3. THROW AWAY ANY UNEATEN DOG FOOD;
Wastage is frowned at by many people. But the act of saving up food after the dog has eaten to its fill is not ideal. We are most times to save up food thus trying to save money an overall cost. In place of this, any uneaten food should be promptly discarded. And replaced with fresh food at the very next meal time. This is even more true in the case of wet, canned, or raw foods which should not be left at room temperature for only more than a couple of hours to prevent spoilage.
4. FEED YOUR DOG FROM AN APPROPRIATE BOWL OR DISH;
You may choose not to believe it. Our dogs have very different needs. Especially when it comes to the type of bowl or dish they use when eating. Some dogs largely prefer elevated bowls, while some also prefer to only eat from the bowl placed at the floor level. And this depends on many factors, which range from the structure of the face, to their speed when eating. In all, these needs should be promptly satisfied.
5. FEED YOUR DOG REGULARLY AT SCHEDULED MEALTIMES;
Like humans that also have scheduled times by which they feed. Our precious babies have their own routine. Or most specifically, they like routine. You would not want to miss your breakfast or lunch break at the already designated periods. Likely, this applies to feeding our fur babies. Feeding at the already scheduled periods not only provides him with a sense of stability. But it also offers you the dog owner a chance to effectively monitor eating habits and track changes.
6. ALWAYS PROVIDE PLENTY OF DRINKING WATER;
The importance of fresh, clean drinking water, cannot be underestimated. Clean water should be provided to your dog at all times. Dogs do have different drinking rates and habits. In general, healthy dogs should drink about one and a half to one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. So as expected, the about 50pound dog should drink between 25 and 50 ounces. And note that larger quantities of water are expected to be taken by puppies, lactating mothers and very active or working dogs.
7. CLEAN YOUR DOG’S FOOD AND WATER DISHES EVERY DAY;
Cleanliness people do say is next to healthy living, and this also applies to dogs. As for us humans, no sane person would love to eat from unwashed or unclean or used plates or dishes. And so for dogs too, the dog owner should make sure food and water dishes are cleaned and thoroughly washed every day. Cleaning these vessels daily, even helps to prevent the growth of bacteria. Or attracting pests and dreadful insects.
Other commandments of dog feeding includes; the extra care taken to be mindful of extra calories from treats and junks, discussing changes in your dog’s eating habits with your local veterinarian, and the need to store your dog’s food appropriately.
